Delhi Talk 171 Then Sai Baba spoke and Dr. Bhagavantam translated his words:
The lingam which has just been generated is called the Prutree Lingam. The jive elemental substances which constitute the creation of the world are present in this Prutree Lingam. In the past, lingams have been named according to the various attributes which they contained. This Prutree Lingam, signifying the entire creation, holds within it the basis of all creation.3
Too much mystery for me to comprehend, I could nevertheless sense the holiness of the moment.
Grasping the exquisite lingam between thumb and his first two fingers and holding it high for all to see, the innocent, radiantly smiling Baba walked out to his devotees. Here was the young, ecstatic Krishna, a marvelously content and happy smile playing across his face and dancing in his eyes. Here was triumphant Krishna, displaying a ball of butter taken from the universal pot. Here was loving Krishna, giving the wealth of his kingdom—the priceless, spiritual insight which brings eternal peace—so happy, so happy. And in the light of this act, in the crystal clearness of this transparent lingam, in this moment of exquisite love, I saw Krishna and Shiva—in fact all names and forms—merge.
How lucky to have been present at this Mahashivarathri! To take any of Baba’s activities for granted, to assume we will always be able to approach so closely, is a mistake. We mustn’t miss a single opportunity. Before making this trip, I thought, “How long will Baba allow such a public observance of Mahashivarathr? This might be the last time.” For the past year I had seen such growth of interest in Baba that I knew that he would soon have to relate to these vast numbers in an altogether different way.
And so it happened. On the morning that ended Mahashiva- rathri, Baba said that he had to deliver sad news. This would be the last time Mahashivarathri would be celebrated like this; the crowds were becoming too unruly—devotees were being injured in the commotion. So this forecasts an inevitable change in which Baba will not be so easily accessible on the physical level.
Another reason for this trip was to take some American psychiatrists to see Baba. Since meeting Baba, 1 have wanted to introduce him to my colleagues; in fact, I think his reality is so
