apparently bringing back a ring he had worn during his previous incarnation.
Those in the audience who knew about Shirdi Baba regarded this as a most sacred moment; they were stunned, as I was. The ring circled the room and all had an opportunity to touch it and marvel at its beauty. We placed it to our foreheads as a sign of our wish that its holy vibration would open our third eye of spiritual wisdom. When it had gone around full circle, Baba took it in his hand, held it a moment—and then looking softly and sweetly at John Svensson, gave it to him. “Here, it is yours,” he said. “Wear it.”
Later I was to hear that Baba told John they were very close in previous lifetimes and that soon he would reveal more to him about who he was and the purpose and meaning of this lifetime. I had made a petty, discounting judgment about the depth of John’s spirituality, and now I discovered that in many lifetimes he and Baba were old buddies. It served to deepen my appreciation of the great mystery that life is. We don’t have the slightest notion of who we really are and why we’re playing out this drama with one another. For years I had wondered what people meant when they described experiencing Baba’s play: that he was the doer. The statement had always had just an intellectual meaning for me. Now I had experienced the meaning of this reality directly.
Baba looked at the psychiatrists again. “Do you want to ask any questions?”
Dr. J. began, “I’m having the strange feeling that my coming to India, that my finding my way here, is not just an accident or chance occurrence. There must be something deeper than I can see. Is that right?”
“Yes, that’s right,” Baba confirmed. “There is something more; your higher self, your higher intelligence, is fashioning the experience because you’re now ready to see more deeply into spiritual matters.”
Dr. J. thought a moment and said, “You know, I have a feeling that this is a very important moment, a very meaningful moment in my life.”
And Baba, with a great gentleness replied, “Yes, and there is even more.” He began talking directly to Dr. J. about the concerns and worries he had voiced earlier. It was as if Baba had actually been with us for breakfast, taking part in the conversation.
