The Making of a New-Age Therapist 211
body language which shouted, “Isn’t he great, isn’t he wonderful?” Finally my brother looked over and whispered in my ear, “Sam, I’ve never seen anyone pick up Telugu so quickly.”
At the end of the discourse, Baba sang a bhajan with such sweetness and melody that everyone melted into his music of love. And when it came time for these young ladies to sing back to him in their excited, high, chirping voices, one was treated to an intimate conversation between divinity and innocence.
Why, Baba, do you bring us out of our minds, into the depths of our devotion and then ask us to translate this great experience back into words? The so-hum meditation, singing bhajans, watching you administer to all these people—these aren’t intellectual exercises; they are deeply moving and humbling spiritual experiences, way beyond concepts and words. How can we translate this great vision into words? What can one say to catch your mystery? And yet, Baba, you ask your devotees to do just that.
You ask us to face our weakest points and confront and overcome our fears. You take us out of the world, show us that it’s an illusion, and then you toss us right back into its treacherous tentacles while we hold on for dear life to your love for protection. What an incredible game! You ask us to be strong in the world, not to get caught in it but to be of service—to use you as a role model. Well, I pray that you give me the strength to do my role well, so I can win a smile from you. I’ll try to live up to your example. I know you don’t need the world at all, not in the slightest. You are complete love, the basis of all creation; you have come to allow people to pull on your gown, to cry to you, to ask for all the many varied and crazy things that tempt us in the world. And you come with just yes, yes, yes! Oh, how can one even come close to your divine example—but I’ll try.
