harmony in society is one way we build inner unity of thought, word, and deed: unity of head, heart, and hand.
First is self-confidence,
Then self-satisfaction (satisfaction of our conscience), Then self-sacrifice,
Which leads to self-realization. (SSB)
Swami aracts us with love and gives us the confidence to lead a life of love. In the process we find satisfaction through following our conscience, by upholding and promoting human values and morality in society. In this manner we learn to love all, serve all, give and forgive, and help ever, hurt never. We may think that we understand these words, but I have found the path surprisingly challenging, even when learning basic lessons.
Learning to Like What You Have to Do
This early lesson taught me about selfless service, service done without expecting the fruits of the labor. I wasn’t expecting any fruits from the writing of Sai Baba: The Holy Man And The Psychiatrist, but I did receive plenty from the joy of writing it and the love expressed by devotees who read it. The book was certainly a gi from Swami. When I took it to Swami and asked who should publish it, he replied that I should. When I said, “But, Swami, I’m not a businessman,” he quickly replied, “I’m not a businessman either.” I learned not to fear taking on work about which I knew nothing. I have since learned that we are frequently asked to do what is most difficult for us, and to give up fret and fright while doing it. “It is not so important to do what you want to do, but it is very important to learn to like to do what you have to do.”
Overcoming Selfishness
Soon aer returning from my first trip, I was asked to consider starting a Sai Baba Center in my home. It would mean
