Personally Touched by Sai Baba’s Values
On a family trip to Swami in August 1989, he brought us close to teach us, through his boundless love, the importance of human values. We had two interviews in which we felt Swami was so familiar with us that he had been a family member forever. He talked to our children about marriage, school, and family, and materialized marriage earrings for our twin daughters. They were beautiful diamond, emerald, and pearl earrings. He first made one pair and then, motioning the twins to come to him, he miraculously tore each earring into two, making them into “Twins for twins.”
He showed our children that he knew them. “They do not take an hour to put on makeup like other girls. They do not like to take money from their parents. They are always saying, ‘No Mom and Dad, we don’t need that much.’” He reinforced respect for the parents, respect for the children, and the importance of good values in family life. Speaking more generally about the importance of good behavior, Swami emphasized, “Be good, see good, and do good.” He mentioned, “Politics without principles, commerce without morality, science without humanity, and education without character are not only useless, but also very dangerous.”
Sharon and I know full well that Swami has protected our children, and by his grace, they have not suffered any serious injuries during their formative years. Finding safety in Swami does not mean that our family has not had to face trials and tribulations. Difficulties, however, have strengthened our practice of dharma, and a family led by right action will be protected by it. Thank God that he champions right behavior in a world that is distorted, distracted, and disillusioned. He once told me, “The reason young people listen to me and control themselves is because they see that I practice what I teach.”
