Psychiatric Inpatients in Minnesota. American Journal of Psychiatry, l989; 146:67-2), the authors cite survey findings that 90 percent of the general public professes belief in God, compared with 40-70 percent of psychiatrists and 43 percent of psychologists. They observe that the religious life of psychiatric patients has rarely been either the subject of or an important variable in psychiatric research. They indicate that belief in God and in the teachings of the Bible, the sense of an aerlife, and social and personal involvement within the church community are relevant dimensions of our patients’ lives that deserve more consideration than the psychiatric profession has customarily provided.
