One day, Swami gave a lesson to his students about the ultimate basis of everything, including the outer world. He instructed one student to stand in front of the others. He then asked the student to raise one arm; the student immediately complied. Swami then told him to drop his arm back down, which the student quickly did. Swami then asked the student to again raise his arm. The student could not. Where did the student get his power to move? From God! Remember God! Remember, With Love, Man Is God.
God Resides in Your Heart
This story was told to me by Dr. K. Hanumanthappa, past vice chancellor of the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning, Swami’s renowned university at Puaparthi. Prior to this position, Dr. K. Hanumanthappa had been the vice chancellor of Bangalore University, one of the world’s largest universities, with an enrollment of 300,000 students. I have asked him to repeat this story numerous times over the years because it has been so hard for me to believe.
Dr. K. Hanumanthappa related that he was with Sai Baba and a number of older devotees on a moonlit night. They were looking at the moon and commenting on its beauty. Swami told them that the moon has intrigued many people and that man had spent a lot of time, money, and energy learning to travel to it. “But the moon isn’t so important,” Swami said. Then, pointing to the heart of one of the older devotees, he said, “Everything is here. Everything is inside. Look for it in your heart.”
Then, to emphasize this point, Sai began to wave his hand in the air, drawing aention to his creative power. In an instant, this startled small group of devotees saw the moon pulled from its place in the sky and fall into Swami’s hand in a miniature form. Swami had plucked the moon from the sky! “Don’t touch it, it has too much energy,” warned Swami, and then he held it close for all to see. When I asked Dr. K. Hanumanthappa if the moon had actually le the sky, he told me that it had. Aer
