P. 21

Prof. Michael Fainzilber investigates one of the brain’s longest challenges—the extreme lengths of its axonal extensions—and how dysfunction in protein synthesis in axons due to aging, stress, and disease leaves cell vulnerable to neurodegenerative disease.
Prof. Emeritus Michal Schwartz pioneered the theory of ‘protective autoimmunity,’ which attributes a revolutionary role to the immune system from infancy through advanced age, in supporting cognitive function, mental stability, stem cell renewal and repair, and in combating neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.
