Page 28 - ESTABLISHING THE INSTITUTE FOR BRAIN AND NEURAL SCIENCES
P. 28

New tools and technologies underlie discovery in brain science, and are necessary to accelerate the pace of discovery across all areas of brain science.
10 CENTER FOR
THE DEVELOPMENT OF INNOVATIVE NEUROTECHNOLOGIES
28
What new technologies will accelerate the
pace of neuroscience discovery?
T his center will leverage that expertise as a hub for the
development of new technologies and techniques to bene t all centers in the Institute for Brain and Neural Sciences. The creation
of such technologies demands close collaboration among biologists, physicists, chemists, engineers, and computer scientists who will work together to identify speci c problems, brainstorm solutions, and then design and build that solution. Technologies will include:
• Neurogenomics
• Microscopy and other visualization
technologies (e.g., optogenetics) • Noninvasive imaging and human
brain modulation technologies
• Novel approaches to growing brain tissue (e.g., ‘organoids,’‘mini-brains’)
• Brain tissue banks
• Arti cial intelligence/big data and
machine learning
• Data harmonization and sharing
The center will also leverage the capabilities of existing state-of-the- art infrastructure at the Weizmann Institute, including the M. Judith Ruth Institute for Preclinical Brain Research and the Azrieli National Institute for Human Brain Imaging and Research.
