As science and medicine continue to contribute to the lengthening of the human lifespan, societies and individuals must face the inevitable consequences, including the increasing prevalence of age-related neurodegenerative diseases. Maintaining the healthy aging of the brain as the body ages is of seminal concern to scientists and societies.
6 CENTER FOR RESEARCH ON THE AGING BRAIN
How does the brain transform in the aging process?
Can this process be halted or reversed?
J ust how the brain changes in aging, and how brain functions are impaired in aging-related disorders,
are issues that remain unclear. Weizmann scientists will work towards developing
a fundamental understanding of the mechanisms of aging in health and disease by combining molecular, structural, and functional studies of the aging brain and conducting behavioral analyses to guide the development of novel therapeutic approaches. Ultimately, we aim to achieve a sophisticated understanding of what drives the aging process and the physiological results of brain aging, which will lead to novel treatments for aging-related disorders.
