Guest Speaker: Brock masters, Manager, Secure Start Services + Professional Continence Care & Ostomy, Hollister Corp.
Brock shared his ostomy journey which began 20 years ago with an elective colostomy to deal with complications from spina bifida (which required 2-3 back surgeries each year through his youth).
He had a cecostomy first which took him 2 hours daily to clean, then had the colostomy a year later
at age 20. He relished the freedom and was able to attend culinary school—his first year of school uninterrupted by surgery or illness since Grade 5. Occasional leaks prompted him at age 21 to develop prototypes for the Sure Seal Ring. His attorney father urged him to patent and develop the idea and find someone to help with the manufacturing. Brock found a business partner and created Active Lifestyle Products, still in business.
Going to ostomy trade shows at such a young age was challenging but the folks at the Hollister booth were always welcoming. Their team leader Jim Stupar told him: “If you dedicate your life to making
a difference, then you’ll make a living.” Brock joined Hollister in Canada in 2006 and now holds 22 granted patents with them. He was a National Key Account Manager and also held roles in research & development and Global Marketing helping make products meet ostomates’ needs in different markets. Joining Secure Start Services (SSS) in the US brought him back to his roots, helping people navigate their ostomy journey and issues like insurance, lifestyle, travel, and sexuality. Brock also works with Hollister’s Continence Care Division, helping people with spinal cord injury and spina bifida.
