CHAPTER 12.
TOO HARD FOR CHICKS
One small extravagance that Tom and Angie allowed themselves was a newspaper each Sunday. Tom and Charles were at the kitchen table, eagerly examining the front page article. Angie was stalking around the kitchen like a cat on hot bricks, clattering and banging as she made coffee and toast. She never could stay still when she was upset.
‘... and why didn’t you ring us up? We should have known, we could have helped!’ she exclaimed.
‘Don’t chuck a wobbly, Ange,’ replied Charles wearily. ‘There was no point. By the time I had a chance to, it was all over, under control, then the police came and I had to get back to work.’
Saffron walked over and spoke up. ‘You should have seen The Cheeseburgers. They’re a way cool, kickarse band. The kids last night totally got off on their music. When the lights came on they just got back to work, like Chuckie said. It was the best thing they could have done; everyone just chilled out.’
Charles stood up and walked over to his mother and gave her a big hug, then he pulled out a chair and sat her at the table. Tears were streaming down her face. Charles took over making the breakfast, while Saffron passed her mother a hankie and sat
