Overnight, the hot, still weather that had built up during the day, broke out in a raging thunder-storm. Saffron drew back her curtains and watched the lightning streak across the sky. Kiwi cowered under the bedclothes as the house shook with thunder. Then came the rain, lashing on the windows and drumming loudly on the old, tin roof. It was scary but exhilarating.
When she walked to school on Monday, Saffron felt happy for no particular reason. Her cares seemed to have been washed away with the rain. Her life, like the suburban streets, seemed cleaner and brighter. The singing of the birds made her think fondly of Mobo’s new family.
'I'm going to take all the petitions to the council this morning, to be filed, ready for the special meeting,' Angie had informed them at the breakfast table. 'We're going to beat them this time! This town's never managed to control those crooks before, but ...'
'They've never had my family to deal with before. I'm proud of you all,' said Tom.
'The council's really stirred up,' Angie continued. 'Some of the decent, honest councillors have realised that they've been bullied and conned by the Mayor. They'll say the meeting on Wednesday is for general business, but I can tell that our business is at the top of the agenda.'
'I'm glad we're all in this together now,' said Saffron. 'None of you know how much it all means to me.' And that really is the truth, she thought to herself.
