The rest of the school-day was spent by Saffron in the same despondent mood, but when the final bell went the buzz of excitement built up by everyone else finally got to her. She threw caution and despair to the winds!
Her three friends were invited home. Later they planned to walk into town together. Because most of the councillors had day-jobs, their meetings were held in the evenings, but the protesters were meeting earlier. That way, the crowd would be gathered, all fired up and listening to speeches, before the council meeting started.
The girls were in a bizarre mood when they left school clutching their banners. Noisy and over the top, full of smart- ass comments and ready to take on any number of rednecks. Luckily they didn’t meet any, only some seniors who chanted, "Psycho-sisters, Psycho-sisters!" from the window of a passing bus, as the four swaggered crazily along the street, arm in arm.
Tom was nowhere to be seen, but he had left them a scrumptious feast. Saffron raided the fridge and brought out salad, cold stuffed chicken and chocolate cake.
It was sheer gluttony. When they got to the cake, Abigail challenged them all to eat it without using hands. A few minutes later, they heard a car pull up outside.
Through the front door, in a mood as outrageous as that of the girls, came Angie with her two friends.
