The bathroom, at least, seemed empty as she walked through it towards the toilet. She almost jumped out of her skin as a loud snore echoed through the tiny room. Someone was fast asleep in the big, old, cast-iron bath.
Saffron walked to the general store at the corner of the main street, carrying a huge basket in each hand. Soon these were loaded with packages from the deli, five loaves of fresh bread and thirty croissants. Her father had lit the barbecue in the backyard when she got home with her load. Their rickety picnic-table was groaning under the weight of what looked like every piece of crockery in the house, as well as butter, jam, sauce, tea, coffee, milk and juice.
