Of course, he didn’t stay still while she stroked him. She had noticed that, even when in one spot, he never stopped moving completely. His eyes darted, his wings stretched and his tail wagged.
‘Ronnie, I too have little time - must find food - chicks get bigger. Very, very greedy.’
‘Hey Mobo! - Wait! Guess what my father brought home for me yesterday? A mobile phone. It does a lot of the things you do, but it’s pretty boring really.’
‘Good, excellent! You now have capacity for direct speech. Bring this tool to me - I shall demonstrate use!’
‘It’s at home today, and I’ve got to go now,’ she told him. While she mounted the pony, the little bird flew in circles around them. ‘How about I come up to Rocky Knoll next Saturday? - That’s in six days time. I’ll show it to you then.'
‘Very well, Ronnie - I also, then, may have something to show to you. Farewell my friend.’
They went their separate ways. The ride to Thornhill didn’t take long. Magic had a long stride which covered ground efficiently and Saffron now knew the shortcuts.
‘Perhaps we should take up endurance,’ the girl suggested to her horse. ‘I wonder if they do that at Pony Club?’ Saffron arrived at eight-fifteen on the dot, exactly the time she had organised to meet her father. The big, double gates into the grounds were open.
She had never seen so many horse floats together before.
