She turned to face him. Looking directly into his eyes, she apologised. ‘I’m sorry, Tom. That wasn’t fair, was it? ... You weren’t to know. Let’s leave the bike here though. Some of those kids can hardly ride. It could have been a disaster.’
Saffron led Magic, while she and Tom walked back up the track. When they were close to the clubhouse, Mitch appeared out of the crowd and said hello.
‘Have you met my father? Mitch this is Tom. Tom, this is Mitch. He’s the one who rescued your laptop when it was nicked at the dance.’ Mitch looked a bit shy when Tom shook his hand and sweetly thanked him.
‘It’s almost time to mount up,’ said the boy, ‘just put Magic in one of those yards and I’ll come over with you while you register.’ Saffron was glad that she knew at least one person there. Mitch introduced them to the Secretary.
‘This here’s my friend, Saffron, and her father Tom. She wants to join Pony Club ... keeps her horse over at Green Mountain.’ It turned out that the Secretary was one of the people involved in the Green Mountain Committee. She knew Angie well and had heard about Saffron’s bold campaign.
They had to fill in lots of forms. Saffron left her father to deal with the paperwork and went to mount up. When she saw how fussy they were being at the gear check, she was glad that Magic was wearing her new bridle.
