Magic also ate a carrot and an apple out of the backpack. Saffron only carried soft things in her pack, like a snake-bite bandage and her lunch wrapped in a jacket. She thought it would be bad enough falling off without landing on something hard or sharp.
On the way home they passed a spiky echidna sending up showers of earth as it dug its way into a termite mound. Saffron stopped and watched, ignoring her pony’s fidgets. The echidna sank lower and lower into the mound until only the tips of its spikes stuck out of the loose earth.
As they passed Rocky Knoll there was a flutter of wings as Mobo landed on Magic’s mane. The horse took objection to the sudden intrusion and started prancing, but Mobo balanced expertly and took no notice.
