‘You’re a bad, bad kitten, but I love you, darling.’ She gave the kitten a hug and left it curled up on her brother’s bed, making sure the door was shut firmly behind her.
‘Saffron! Is that you home already?’ called her mother’s voice from the office. ‘What was all that crashing and banging? Are you alone? I thought I heard voices.’
With the fax in one hand Saffron hurried through the office door before Angie could emerge and spot their visitor. ‘I was only shouting at Kiwi; she’s been pouncing on the fax again.’
‘Well, at least she hasn’t shredded it this time.’
‘Can I watch T.V. for a while?’ she asked her mother.
‘Yes, for an hour or so, I’m busy in here and Tom’s gone for a
ride.’ Angie sat back down at her drafting table, which was covered with plans.
‘This is our new townhouse development. We’ll be able to build four hundred units there if the council has vision enough to pass it. Each unit is solar-passive and has views over native gardens leading down to the river.’
Angie pointed at the drawings in front of her. ‘See here, these are the bicycle paths. Those circles are playgrounds - over there is a gym with an Olympic swimming pool. The land and the river are a real mess - an industrial wasteland. This should really improve the town.’
‘It sounds great Angie. I’m going to make myself some lunch - do you want a sandwich?’
‘Yes please, and make me a cup of coffee too.
