Pausing beside Patrick, Saffron eyed off the mobile phone attached to his belt. ‘What sort of phone is that? Would it get reception here?’ she asked.
He gave her his peculiarly sweet smile and removed his mobile from its holder. Holding it out to her he answered, ‘It’s an iPhone, special long-range. Yes, it’s working here, it’s pretty good in general.
‘I’ve been asking Tom and Angie for a mobile for ages. They say they can’t afford it. Angie's done a lot of work on the townhouse development by the river, but it hasn’t been approved and she hasn’t been paid yet.’
‘Yes, she showed us the plans for that. It looks great. I suppose you miss your friends back in the city. Do you want to borrow this phone and make a call or two? It’s okay ... it’s on a cheap rate and the company pays.’
‘Oh, yes please!’ replied Saffron, a bit shocked at having what she had been angling for offered to her so freely. She walked well away from the others and sat on a shady patch of grass under the branches of an old, spreading, gum tree. A minute later a brown blur flashed towards her and landed on her wrist.
‘You have wireless telephone, Ronnie, well done!’
‘I got it from Patrick, he’s the botanist, the one down there with the camera.’
‘Let me hear this transmitter, these number worms, I must work out the frequency of each.’
‘I know,’ she said. ‘We’ll start by ringing up directory assistance.
