‘They feed on the nectar, which they lick from the flowers. They also eat the insects.’
Patrick shone his
light and pointed his
camera at a larger possum.
He called softly to the others,
‘Hey! There’s a ringtail up there
too. They eat more leaves than flowers.
Look how its tail is curled round the branch,
it’s using it like a fifth leg.’ Unlike the gliders which
were constantly moving about, the ringtail just stared at them, paralysed by the spotlight.
Saffron stayed in the lead on the way down the mountain; she knew where she was going better than the others. As she shone her torch in front of her, she felt like a total zombie. It was getting way past her usual bedtime and she found herself unable to stop yawning. The more tired she got, the more nervous she got.
She started to have dark fantasies about vicious, feral pigs, lurking snakes and packs of dingoes. She was a city girl after all, not used to this sort of thing.
