NATIONAL ORGANIZATION OF BLACK LAW ENFORCEMENT EXECUTIVES NEW ORLEANS METROPOLITAN CHAPTER
Dear Conference Attendees:
On behalf of the members of the New Orleans Metropolitan Chapter of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), I welcome you to New Orleans and to the third annual New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) EPIC Police Peer Intervention Leadership Conference. NOBLE was founded in September 1976, to provide black law enforcement executives a unified voice regarding issues impacting the criminal justice system. Since that time, NOBLE has dedicated its energies to ensuring equality in the administration of justice and in the provision of public service to all communities. We are thrilled to lend the same energy to NOPD’s EPIC program.
EPIC is at the same time, both simple and bold. It takes what many of us have done for years (that is, take action to prevent mistakes and misconduct before they occur), and gives us a more effective way of doing things. By teaching practical intervention strategies and tactics, EPIC turns passive bystanders into active bystanders, and active bystanders into more effective active bystanders. In the end, everyone wins — civilians, police officers, our departments, and our profession in general.
This year, NOPD has expanded the reach of its EPIC initiative by joining forces with Georgetown University Law Center’s Innovative Policing Program to bring active bystandership training to law enforcement agencies across the U.S. The Georgetown University Law Center’s Active Bystandership for Law Enforcement (ABLE) Project will take what began here in New Orleans and give it a national home. The ABLE Project will provide free workshops, materials, resources, and training to law enforcement agencies committed to embracing active bystandership. In September, the ABLE Project will offer a free Train-The-Trainer event in which many members of the NOPD will be participating. It is energizing to see a program born right here in New Orleans receiving so much positive national attention.
NOBLE is honored to join Loyola University New Orleans School of Law and other community supporters as a sponsor of NOPD’s third annual EPIC Leadership Conference. We are proud of our NOPD colleagues for the trail we are blazing in police peer intervention. We are proud of our Department and our City for supporting our efforts in that regard. So please enjoy the conference and enjoy our (virtual) New Orleans hospitality.
Respectfully,
Retired Captain Jenerio Sanders, President NOBLE New Orleans Metropolitan Chapter
