Hean Koo is an associate in the Intellectual Property Practice Group in the firm's Washington, D.C. office. He is also the Lead Associate for the firm's Open Source Team.
Areas of Practice
His practice focuses on open source and patent prosecution and client counseling in a variety of fields including computer software, video games, virtual worlds, social media, virtual reality and 3-D imaging, augmented reality, social networks, mobile advertising and mobile payments, medical devices, among others.
In addition to preparing and prosecuting patent applications, Mr. Koo has experience with a wide range of patent related matters including re-issue applications, Ex Parte and Inter Partes Reexamination requests, Appeals before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's Patent Trial and Appeal Board, IP reviews, non-infringement and invalidity opinions, and litigation support and strategy.
Prior to entering the legal profession, Mr. Koo led a team of biologists that sequenced the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana at a prominent genome research organization. There, he later managed a team of engineers responsible for software and data deliverables for multi-million dollar contracts. In this capacity, along with his team, he designed, developed and implemented software, relational databases, and directories for storing, mining, displaying and managing terabytes of genomic data.
Mr. Koo is a contributor and co-author for a number of studies published in major, well-respected, scientific journals, including Nature and Science.
