 What’s Your Cut?
“Regular?” It’s a common question asked at every TSR store whenever a customer hands over his or her skates, but do you know there is more than one way to sharpen skates and that “Regular” may not be what you (or your skater) like best? Too deep a hollow on the blade edges means a skater cuts into the ice too much, thus slowing them down. Too shallow on the blade and a skater has more speed, but less bite into the ice thus making turns a bit more “slippery. The “regular” TSR house cut is 5/8”, a hollow that is a great for both glide AND bite.
Who would want a shallower or a deeper cut? According to Derek Soucy, TSR’s district manager and the TSR Haverhill store manager, an experienced, lighter skater would benefit from a deeper cut. That skater would not feel the negative effects of a deeper hollow during turns, thus keeping speed AND turning ability. Speed is a major
benefit in today’s game.
There is also a cut called a “Z- channel” – a sharpening that puts two outside and two inside edges
in your steel. Great for poor ice conditions, the Z-channel cut is an excellent option for both speed (glide) AND bite.
So now, if you don’t know your cut, just ask us! Skate sharpening prices start at $6 for a house regular 5/8” sharpening. Z-channel sharpenings are only available at TSR Salem and TSR Manchester.
With nine (9) locations in the Merrimack Valley and Southern New Hampshire, there is bound to be a TSR at a rink near you, staffed by knowledgeable TSR team members ready to make sure players stay at the top of their game with expert sharpening, great service, and the core TSR values.
