Page 75 - Song Maps - A New System to Write Your Best Lyrics - Simon Hawkins
P. 75

"Indescribable" by Chris Tomlin–snapshots of inspirational physical locations to illustrate the title ("highest of heights to the depths of the sea," etc.).
Musical
"My Girl Back Home" from South Pacific–an excellent example of Places and the kind of high-quality lyric crafting we often see in musicals. While this doesn't follow the Map, strictly it visits everywhere from Princeton to Southeast Asia.
Jazz
"You're the Top" by Ella Fitzgerald–a Cole Porter special and an extraordinary mix of places/roles/food/other objects! But it shows that Places can be an effective way of developing a lyric, especially with the title set so perfectly ("If I'm the bottom, you're the top").
Exercise
If you have a copy of the Song Maps Workbook this would be a good time to complete Exercise #5– Places.
