"Let's Call The Whole Thing Off" by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong–a classic Gershwin song– takes a different approach to Roles by using narrative to switch between roles ("You say XX, I say YY"). An extended Intro sets up the whole idea effectively ("Our romance is growing flat"). V1 launches into the differences between the two people, in turn, taking differences in pronunciation initially (check out the fun spellings in the lyric sheet!) before going into likes and dislikes. The B section elegantly sets up the tension that is the payoff ("If we call the whole thing off then we must part [...] will break my heart"). Great writing.

If you have a copy of the Song Maps Workbook, this would be a good time to complete Exercise #6 – Roles.
