Akku
Kui is a Kazakh musical tradition in which songs are learned by heart and passed on from generation to generation among nomadic tribes.
Akku, or The Swan, is a melodic interpretation of the Kazakh origin myth, in which a white swan was transformed into a princess, and later gave birth to a boy, the forefather of the Kazakhs. The melody is believed to imitate the movements and sounds made by swans as they circle around the lake and fly away, and the song is performed during the wedding ceremony.
“Kui expresses a bride’s sorrowful, mournful parting lamentations in leaving her childhood behind, but also carries a note of hope, one that is found in the cheerful embrace of her path into adulthood. It is about letting go, and learning to fly.”
