Gizella Warburton
In making the Ecchos series of vessel forms
(Ritual and Reverence), Gizella Warbur-
ton imagined a place of uncertainty, a place
of transience and loss. The works refer-
ence loved ones, trust, freedoms, challeng-
es, and hopes. All bring particular “cross-
ing places” – what comes before, and what
emerges in the aftermath, as the “unsettled”
settles. This sense of a crossing place is a
thread which, at particular moments, has felt
profoundly resonant: a “cruci” that holds
layered meanings … a warp and a weft … a
suture to repair a wound … an ancient figu-
rative human mark. This symbol, for War-
burton, is about being. “In the making of
these forms,” she says, “I find a stillness that
offers a sanctuary within times of internal
and external turmoil. In capturing fragility
and nurturing repair, these vessels hold an
embodiment of resilience and a sense that, in
time, this too will pass….”
