Adela Akers
Rain and Smoke (Reading Between the
Lines) is a reflection on wildfires where
Adela Akers lived. Mandatory evacuations
created safety but also isolation. Linen
gauze, with raw edges exposed, suggests
the vulnerability of our environment. Cha-
os is expressed by the alternate endings on
the strips. The writing on the metal is from
wine bottle foil, listing the winery from
where it comes, chosen as a theme of be-
longing to something else and obliterated
by exposure to heat or fire.
