James Bassler
The cloth James Bassler wove for NRA
Approved (Reading Between the Lines)
– batik dyed and stitched – references a
19th century Japanese fireman’s jacket. It
was also inspired by the 21st-century de-
bate about gun violence and what we, as a
nation, could do to make our schools safe
from the tragic incidents of our times. The
NRA had openly suggested that teachers
and students wear bullet-proof vests. Often,
Bassler noted, our young students wear wa-
ter-proof aprons when doing creative work.
Here, in these woven sculptural forms, he
has added camouflage – used throughout
history as a means of protection – to help
conceal children in harm’s way.
