Stéphanie Jacques
Among the series of sculptures that make
up the work Ce qu’il en reste (Radical Or-
nament), a small human figure stands up-
right. In this series, Stéphanie Jacques
gives form to hybrid figures made from
skeins of willow coated with gesso. A lin-
en thread connects the scattered elements
that compose them. Their knotted walls
open onto an interior space. Here, Jacques
extends the anthropomorphic forms with
a tube of linen thread with sewn ends.
Showing the shimmer, the finesse, the fra-
gility, and also the vigor of this material in
freedom, Jacques suggests the trace of a
broken bond or a possible reconnection.
Certain emotions and intuitions propel
Jacques to make specific objects. Each
sculpture of the cycle in Ce qu’il en reste in-
carnates a new state. The objects are not an
end in themselves but a document of what
has passed.
