Misako Nakahira
Misako Nakahira is interested in the way
stripes are used to establish order between
people and space. “In my work with stripes,
I explore the tension between order and
disorder — the structured mechanisms of
weaving and the shifting, fleeting impres-
sions evoked by wind or light,” the artist
says. “This interplay allows the familiar to
re-emerge as surprise, awakening dormant
images within our memory.”

(Reading Between the Lines) draws on the
pictorial concept of “illusion,” focusing
on the perception of layered depth. While
no physical layers actually exist, the use of
moku-ito – weft yarns twisted from different
colors– creates the appearance of superim-
position. Through this ambiguity between
reality and illusion, Nakahira seeks to inves-
tigate what humans attempt to perceive in
the space in between the two.
