Eduardo Portillo and María Dávila
At a certain moment, due to the growing po-
litical conflict in Venezuela, Eduardo Portillo
and María Dávila sought refuge in the moun-
tains and began to travel to places farther
away from their home region but still within
their country. They visited remote places with
rugged landscapes and places where people
continue to live resiliently to understand the
geographic and cultural space in which they
live. They looked for moments of harmony
in mountaineer communities that meet for a
common purpose, beyond their differences,
especially during the traditional festivals. “Our
world is here,” they have concluded, “in these
mountains, in small spaces, they are safe ter-
ritories which help us to create, to build deep
interconnections with life, family, friends, and
nature, giving us the guidelines to follow in
the midst of turbulence and changes.” Viaje
(Journey) (Ritual and Reverence) by Portillo
and Dávila references their travels. “The way
is the goal of the journey,” they say. “It allows
us to grow, reflect, and confront differences.
It’s a space to encounter new people and plac-
es that nourish our lives and our work.”
