“Puns, palindromes, rebuses, and anagrams can be found buried underneath and lying on top of John McQueen’s perforated surfaces of bent, tied, and woven sticks. The title of SPEKIGNTUNGS, takes some work to decode. The words are right there, simple, yet one must slow down to understand. Most events in our lives are not marked by slow and close attention — we all make quick decisions, quick edits and impulse purchases. Whether drawn with sticks, or written in pictures, McQueen’s creations become symbols, shapes for building, sounds for tuning, and game pieces for a new puzzle.”
