McQueen grew up in a family with ties to aviation. As a child fascinated with flight, he asked the question why humans can’t fly. In this piece, a soaring bird sits atop a column covered with human figures made out of bark. The figures are climbing or falling down the column. As much as we try, we can’t reach the heights that birds can on our own.
