As an aid in quietening excitable, nervous, unruly or hard to handle horses.
APVMA Approval No. 80410/100822 | ACVM No. A011152 (New Zealand)
HORSE HACK: For best results, avoid excitement or stimulation of the animal prior to administration.
INDICATIONS
SED-Ace Oral Gel is orally administered acepromazine maleate to provide a dose- dependent tranquiliser, relaxant and sedative effects in horses. It provides a safe, convenient and effective method of tranquilising and sedating horses. Acepromazine maleate also mediates hypotensive, hypothermic and antispasmodic actions. It has little, if any, analgesic effect, so that painful procedures must be avoided unless accompanied by an analgesic, particularly where animals are known to have unpredictable temperaments.
Tranquilising Action - Low doses of oral acepromazine maleate promote a mild tranquilising effect, useful as an aid in quietening excitable, nervous and hard-to-handle horses. It can provide a beneficial “calming” effect during handling, training, transport and confinement. It reduces excitability, whilst retaining co-ordination and awareness of environment.
Examples of use of SED-Ace Oral Gel
• An aid in training fractious horses.
• To calm nervous horses and reduce stress.
• In minor surgical procedures in which a general anaesthetic is not required.
• Asapreanaestheticagenttoaugmentaction&permitsmoothinduction&recovery. • In non surgical procedures such as shoeing, clipping and dentistry.
• Handling mares during breeding.
• To calm horse to assist in lameness examinations and ensure consistency of gait. • Horses that have wounds which cannot heal due to constant irritation (biting,
licking etc.).
• After major surgery to reduce straining.
• Useful aid in the treatment of colic and tetanus.
• To calm horses during transport.
• To calm horses during turn out.
• As a hypotensive agent and to improve peripheral blood flow.
PHARMACOLOGY
On an empty stomach, the tranquillisation effect will be apparent in horses in 20-40 minutes, and with a duration of up to 3 hours. On a full stomach, the full tranquillisation effect will be apparent within 40-60 minutes or longer.
During sedation, horses will normally retain visual and auditory activity, so that loud sounds or rapid movements should be avoided. Exceeding the recommended dosage will not necessarily intensify the effects of Sed-Ace Oral Gel Oral Tranquilliser for Horses.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
HORSES: To be given orally. 2 mL-10 mL per 450 kg body- weight (0.11 to 0.26 mg per kg body weight).
Due to the risk of potential irreversible penile prolapse, when administering to male horses (stallions and geldings) use the lowest dose recommended to produce the required effect.
For best results in horses, give gel on an empty stomach, 30 minutes prior to feeding. Tranquillising effect may be more pronounced if the feed and water intake is limited during a five hour period before dosing.
Remove cap from nozzle. Turn ring to required dose setting which should be on the left of the ring. Insert the nozzle into the animal’s empty mouth. Direct towards back of tongue, and depress plunger to deposit paste. Lift animal’s chin and hold mouth closed for a few seconds to ensure that full dose is swallowed. Replace cap on nozzle.
SIDE EFFECTS
The side effects of oral ACP are less than with I.V. administration.
Paralysis of the retractor penis muscle has been associated with the use of intravenously administered acepromazine maleate in horses. When this occurs steps should be immediately taken immediately to reduce any penile swelling and return the penis to the prepuce.
The required dosage of Sed-Ace Oral Gel Oral Tranquilliser for Horses may vary depending on the individual temperament of the animal. In some horses, lower doses of Sed-Ace may be adequate.
Dose will also vary depending on desired level of sedation; mild, moderate or heavy.
