Why No Home Is Safe From The Threat Of Moths
The number of moth infestations has been rising in recent years, and pest controllers say that our modern lifestyles are to blame.
We heat our homes for many months of the year. We don’t spring clean them with the same vigour that previous generations did. And we have more clothes than ever before. Those factors combined with milder Winters have provided ideal breeding conditions for clothes-eating moths.
Entomologists say the old-fashioned spring cleans that our grandmothers carried out were an excellent way to combat moths. That’s because moths don’t like disturbance and all that beating of carpets and rugs, folding and unfolding of clothes and blankets, and rigorous sweeping or vacuuming inside and under wardrobes that were so much part of spring cleaning would have kept their numbers down.
Nowadays, cheaper clothing means many people have lots more clothes which often hang undisturbed in wardrobes for months at a time. That gives moths even more to devour.
There has also been a rise in the number of people buying second-hand clothes from charity and vintage shops. The problem with second-hand garments is that they may carry clothes moths. Unless the clothes
