“What’s Eating You 2?” Mothmageddon
This kind of thing is happening in homes throughout the UK because clothing moths are so prevalent, particularly since fabrics like cashmere and wool (moth favourites) once so exclusive have become more affordable. (You only have to see our Moth Spread Map which you’ll find at www.caraselledirect.com/moth_spread/ to see the degree of infestations that are affecting areas throughout the UK.)
So who are these destroyers of our clothes and finery?
Clothes Moths Under the Spotlight
Clothes moths feed on keratin, which is the main protein element in human hair, skin and fingernails. This means that jumpers, coats, upholstered furniture, feathers and furs make perfect breeding grounds for clothes moths because of the presence of human keratin that’s been left behind by hair oils or the salt in urine or sweat stains.
There are three types of clothes moths: Webbing Clothes Moths, Casemaking Clothes Moths and Tapestry Clothes Moths. The first two are the most common and the ones most likely to be lurking somewhere in your wardrobe or cupboards.
Like butterflies, moths undergo a complete metamorphosis from egg to larva to pupa and then adult.
