Amber recommends constant vigilance, regular cleaning and a thorough inspection of textiles. Her routine, for example, involves checking in all the crevices of furniture, and checking the seams and binding, collars, cuffs and pockets of garments.
She also recommends moving furniture to clean underneath at least monthly along with relentless housecleaning including chimneys, attics, and cellars.
Moths Invade Museum Exhibits
The Pitt Rivers Museum, home of Oxford University’s collection of anthropology and world archaeology, was one of the museums forced to call on David Pinniger’s services.
The museum has always had a few clothes moths, but in 2005 the pests took hold of one display case and despite it being treated straight away, the problem spread to other cases. They each contained many objects made of natural fibres, hairs and skins – snack food for moth larvae.
