A UK vintage shop owner who does go to extraordinary lengths to prevent moths damaging stock is Elena Jackson, the owner of Foxtrot Vintage Shop, located on the outskirts of Salisbury (with a sister shop on the high street in Marlborough).
Foxtrot provides vintage costumes for film and theatre companies worldwide and has an archive collection of rare pieces that it loans to schools, colleges and museums.
Elena, a lifelong vintage devotee, advises everyone from re- enactment groups to top stylists on period costume and frequently appears on radio and TV as well as at charitable events. She’s also a regular contributor on BBC Radio Solent and to Homes and Antiques magazine and Vintage Explorers magazine.
So she is more aware than anyone that her investment and businesses are totally dependent on her ability to keep moths at bay as they could potentially wipe out her stock or personal vintage collection at any time. That’s why she does everything possible to eliminate moths before vintage clothes go from her pre-treatment department to her shops.
That’s not all. Elena and her team advise customers on the best way to keep their garments moth-free. They help educate everyone on how to preserve garments and keep moths at bay.
“Our anti-moth education programme is a big thing about our business,” says Elena. “Not only are we giving the finest customer service but more importantly we strongly believe in educating our customers about how to best preserve their garments as if we don’t, those garments will simply not survive and there will be even more of a shortage than there is now, which is bad all around.
“Our customers love our education programme too as they realise that just a few basic, simple steps can stop the problem. And let’s face it, prevention is better than cure!”
