 Haydn String Quartet No.35 ‘Lark” Op.64 no.5 Brahms String Quartet No.2 a minor Op.51
Our spring concert opens with the Lark Quartet by Haydn, who is known as the Father of the String Quartet, as the tradition of the genre is thought to have started in his hands. The avian nickname of the famous “lark” quartet comes from the unforgettable winged melody high on the violin’s E string, played as a soaring descant to the staccato march for the lower three instruments. This irresistible music is full of wonderful surprises and melodies. It’s a perfect welcome to spring.
The program closes with Brahms’ masterwork, a serious, uncompromising piece that everywhere bears his immediately identifiable language, rich in poignant harmonic suspensions, rhythmic displacements, nervous passion, and melting lyricism.
