time to act on what you know. If you say that you are a Christian, that you believe certain teachings about Jesus, then you cannot leave it there. You must balance truth with experience, belief with behavior, doctrine with duty.”
Main Aim:
What is his main point? What the writer is mainly concerned about in these verses is backsliding—toying on the edge of apostasy. This is a grave issue to the Holy Spirit, so He guides the Apostle to address it practically.
Whom Is the Writer Addressing?
What types of people are in danger of backsliding? There are people who say they believe in the right things, but that belief never fully translates into their lifestyles. They have no problem listening to Christian music, reading Christian books, and hearing sermons. Nevertheless, when it comes down to acting in complete harmony with their “professed belief,” there is a discrepancy.
However, there are others on the opposite end of the spectrum -- those who believe that experience is everything. These people are always moved by random acts of kindness. They feel that nothing else matters--including doctrine--and they spend their entire lives seeking experiences. One might question whether such people are saved at all, however, this word is meant to cause self-inspection and heart examination, not the spiritual investigation of others.
Where do you find yourself now? Do you feel restless? Are you discontent with where you are right now? Are you persevering in faith and faithfulness to Christ and with the church? In our focal verses, there are eight strong reasons why church is not an option for the true Christian.
Reasons to Remember:
