Dinuba's Cortez claims Masters wrestling title
MVT Staff Report
Dinuba High’s Noah Cortez is now the pro- grams second wrestler to capture a Division 1 Mas- ters title after defeating Buchanan’s Reymundo Ruiz, 6-4, in the final of the 154-pound match Sat- urday in Lemoore.
Cortez joins current Fresno State wrestler and Fresno City College state champion, Isaiah Perez to do so. Cortez will be in action at this weekend’s Masters tour- nament at Hoover with a shot at going to the CIF State Championships in Bakersfield on Feb. 27-29.
Cortez dominated his first three opponents recording a pin against Kingsburg’s Noah Rocha before a 14-2 decision against Clovis West’s An- drew Cantoriano and a majority decision against Selma’s George Zuniga.
Sophomore heavy- weight Javier Martinez finished third overall af- ter a 1-0 win against Kade
Campbell of Buchanan. Campbell entered the tournament ranked No. 6 in the state. Martinez opened with a pin against Clovis West’s Joe Alaniz before falling to eventual champion, Josiah Hill of Bakersfield. Martinez then defeated Central’s Isa Watson, 3-2, before facing Campbell.
Freshman Coen Quin- tana also had a solid show- ing, placing sixth at 115. Quintana pinned Clovis West’s Sajin Zacarias but dropped his next match to Clovis’ Dario Lemus. Quintana posted an im- pressive technical fall against Cameron Estrada before edging Kings- burg’s Josh Tartaglia, 4-3.
Other Emperors who placed were JJ Martinez, who was 10th at 197, and Atzel Moreno (134) along with Jasias Carrasco (108), each finished in 11th.
As a team, Dinuba was 12th with 69 points while Buchanan was first with 324.

MVT Staff Report
Reedley High’s stellar boys soccer season came to an early end in the quar- terfinals of the Central Section Division 1 playoffs, as the fourth-seeded Cen- tral High Grizzlies scored in the 77th minute of play and held on to edge the fifth-seeded Pirates, 2-1, in Fresno on Feb. 13.
Senior Robert Carde- nas scored on a header from the left side in the 18th minute for Reedley, which finished with a 20- 2-5 record and its second straight North Yosemite League championship. Coach Eric Velarde said he believed it was a school record for fewest losses in a soccer season.
worked so hard,” he said. “I really felt we were the better team [then Central], but that’s sports. I really felt we created a lot of op- portunities, but we couldn’t capitalize on those half chances.”
Central grabbed the early lead by drawing a handball call in Reedley’s defensive box and getting a penalty shot. The Pirates’ goalie made a great diving save, but was ruled to have left his mark early on the shot. Central converted the second opportunity in the 16th minute for the first score of the match.
“It seemed quite petty, because I haven’t seen that called all year anywhere.” Velarde said, adding that the handball call also ap- peared questionable in video. In the closing sec-
onds of the match, an ap- parent handball in the Griz- zlies’ defensive box wasn’t called, preventing the Pi- rates from a penalty shot to potentially tie the score.
The match had a cham- pionship atmosphere, and the emotion showed with five yellow cards handed out – three accrued by Reedley.
On Feb. 11 the Pirates opened the playoffs with a 3-0 shutout of No. 12 seed Buchanan High. Robert Al- cantar, Tomaz Alvarez and Adam Sanchez all scored while Phillip Rico and Levy Alcantar collected assists. Rico also assisted on Cardenas’ goal against Central, with the senior fin- ishing the campaign with 40 goals (a new school re- cord) and 12 assists.
home game for the semi- finals on Feb. 18 against Arroyo Granded, which knocked off top seed San Luis Obispo by a 3-2 score on Feb. 13.

Reedley High’s girls closed out the season with a 6-17-5 record after drop- ping a 2-0 decision to the Selma High Bears in a sec- tion Division 3 playoff at Immanuel Sports Complex on Feb. 12. The ninth-seed- ed Pirates battled No. 8 Sel- ma to a scoreless draw at halftime before the Bears tallied twice in the closing 40 minutes.
Reedley posted a 4-3-3 record in league, good for a fourth place finish, de- spite missing a number of key players for good por- tions of the season due to injuries.

The Immanuel High boys basketball postseason road stretched to Sacra- mento last season in Divi- sion 4. This year, the Eagles were hoping to get an initial trip to Kern County in a bid to keep their season going in Division 2.
Immanuel (18-10) was given the No. 7 seed for this
year’s D2 playoffs, which meant a Feb. 18 home con- test against Central Sequoia League rival Hanford West (results were unavailable at press time). It was the sec- ond meeting between the schools in two weeks, and a win would give the Eagles a 7 p.m. quarterfinal road game on Thursday, Feb. 20, at Independence High in Bakersfield.
Immanuel finished 7-5 in CSL play after posting a 62-58 home win over Cen- tral Valley Christian on Feb. 11. Junior Winston Williams scored 30 points (includ- ing 13 of 16 free throws), pulled down 10 rebounds and collected four steals in the win. Shawn Rodgers scored 14 points while Josh Tolpezninkas added nine points as the Eagles posted their seventh win in their last eight outings.
Immanuel’s girls fin- ished the season at 7-20 and 1-11 in league with a 49-47 home loss to CV Chris- tian on Feb. 11. Sammie Greene led the Eagles with 15 points — eight in the first quarter – while Jamie Clothier added 11 points and Alegria Pena 10 points.
Despite the record, Im- manuel’s girls battled tough in league with six of the losses coming by six points or fewer.
