Our Pet of the Week is "Balto," a young Siberian Husky. "He was just picked up," said volunteer coordi- nator Kim Reed. "We don't know much about him yet. He's probably between 1-2 years old. He's getting along well with the other dogs - and we're hoping his owner will see his picture and come to the shelter to claim him."
Kim named him "Balto" after the famous Siberian husky and sled dog who led his team on the final leg of the 1925 serum run to Nome, in which diphtheria antitoxin was transported from An- chorage, Alaska, to Nenana, Alaska, by train and then to Nome by dog sled to combat an outbreak of the disease.
Other dogs at the shelter hoping for forever homes are:
• Mandy, a 4 year old very sweet pitbull mix who was found wandering on the 1900 block of Hoag Avenue.
"She's obviously had a lit- ter of puppies not very long ago," said Kim.
• Bear, a shepherd mix who is probably used to be- ing an indoor dog. He's potty trained and loves mingling with people.
• Mama, a young pitbull who obviously just had a lit- ter and was apparently aban- doned by the police station.
• Queenie, a 3 year old pitbull who loves water. She's up to date with shots and spayed.
• Cowboy, a 3 year old boxer/pitbull/pug mix who loves laps and hugs.
• Sara, a brindle pitty, abandoned with her pups in an orchard. She's potty trained and loves hugs and kisses.
• Rudy, a young terrier, who gets along with all sizes of other dogs, not cats.
Call animal control officer Mario Irazoqui at (559) 618- 9071 or volunteer coordina- tor Kim at (559) 250-5270 or message the Sanger Animal Shelter Facebook page and leave your email address to find out about the adoption process.
Let Kim know if you're able to provide a temporary foster home for any of the shelter dogs or if you would like to be a volunteer at the shelter.
Fostering or adopting is critical right now. The shel- ter is full.
"We need leashes," said Kim.
"We have quite a few large dogs at the shelter right now and our volunteers take them all on long walks. So, we hope someone will donate a few heavy duty leashes."
