Immanuel makes it look easy, improves to 7-2 with win big win
MVT Staff Report
The Immanuel High Eagles erupted for 28 points in the first quarter and never looked back in a 48-7 dismantling of Millen- nium High Falcons on Oct. 25 in Tracy.
Immanuel improved to 7-2 on the season, and for the second straight week allowed just one score while racking up more than 40 points on offense.
Receiver Trace Pires had a pair of touchdown receptions from quarter- back Hector Davila while Winston Williams and Matt Tiger scored touchdowns in the first 12 minutes. Tiger also added an inter- ception during the Eagles’ opening quarter blitz.
Davila had a big day, completing all five of his pass attempts for 101 yards and the three scores. PIres had TD receptions of

set up the Pirates’ second score.
Hoover rallied in the second quarter, using quick short passes to multiple receivers on the short side of the field to finish a pair of scoring drives to move within 21-15 at halftime. The Pa- triots then stopped Reed- ley’s opening drive of the third quarter, and looked ready to take possession for a possible game-tying drive, but Devin Decker recovered a muffed punt at the Hoover 33 and Rios capped off a seven-play drive to make it 28-14. Another fumble recov- ery thwarted a Hoover drive, and Cortez capped the RHS possession with a 25-yard dash up the middle.
“Mike did a real good job of just focusing in on the game plan and what we had for him,” Gates said of Rios. “It’s a lot to put on somebody’s shoul- ders. There’s a lot of stuff that he has to make checks at the line [of scrimmage] on, so it was a lot to get him trained up in the week that we had. So his confidence
35 and 33 yards while Wil- liams’ reception covered 12 yards. Tiger rushed for 38 yards. Jacob Cabrera was the Eagles’ leading rusher with five carries for 87 yards including two touchdowns in the second half.
Millennium’s lone score came in the second quarter on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Caden Duke to Aahil Hudda.
Immanuel finished with 247 rushing yards and 348 total yards. Tiger, Williams and linebacker Michael Kawagoe keyed another strong defensive effort.
Immanuel closes out the regular season on the road, traveling to Kern County for a Friday, Nov. 1 contest against McFarland High. Playoff seedings will take be determined on Sat- urday, Nov. 2.

level now is really good, and we’re going to put as much on his plate as we think he can handle.”
Gabaldon bruised his right shoulder in the win over Fresno High on Oct. 18, and the injury kept him out of the Hoover game. Gates said he will practice this week and remains on a day-to-day basis for Sunnyside.
“Mike and Danny and
Max are coming along as well, we’re starting to get it,” Gates said of the offense. “There’s noth- ing that beats game reps, nothing. So Mike has an- other four quarters under his belt and so does Max and Danny.”
Gates praised the team’s work ethic and improvement as they clinched the school’s first winning season in 10
years, when the Pirates went 7-4 under the late Justin Garza in 2009.
“It’s been amazing to watch their confidence grow,” Gates said. “They walk into games thinking they’re ready and pre- pared and will do well.
“They’ve bought in. They request to run sprints now, because they see that’s part of the rea- son we’re successful.”
