Reedley High
finishes 5-1 as
Madera South
rallies for
36-29 victory
MVT Staff Report
The Reedley High Pirates came within a quarter of a perfect 6-0 football season, but the Madera South High Stallions spoiled the sto- rybook finish by scoring a touchdown and two- point conversion in the final quarter to pull out a 36-29 victory on April 30 in Madera.
"It was a great game, with a playoff atmo- sphere," said RHS coach Tony Gates. "I knew they would be prepared, and it was a back and forth battle."
Reedley — which swept through North Yosemite League play to win the school's first outright league football title since 1973 – rallied from an early deficit and took a 22-14 lead be- fore Madera South (2-2) scored on a run and pass to go ahead 28-22. The Pirates then scored in the third to go up 29-28, and had two touchdowns nullified by penalty be- fore being stopped on downs deep in MS terri- tory late in the third.

Reedley High's Ryan Warkentin turned the corner to pick up some of his xxx yards rush- ing against Madera South High in the teams' season finale on April 30. The Stallions knocked off the Pirates by a 36-29 score as RHS finished the season with a 5-1 record.

season by rushing 26 times for 238 yards — just hours after belting a double and triple in a baseball win over Sun- nyside High – and the Pirates turned in a solid offensive performance despite being without versatile senior Mike Rios because of injury. In the game. Reedley also lost senior receiver to a broken collarbone after a long catch and run during the game.
"I'm so proud of the guys," Gates said. "There wasn't a lot of tears at the end, they were just exhausted. And that's what I want. they laid it all out there."
Gates said the team
overcame many hur- dles during the COVID- delayed championship season. Two long delays because of the virus de- layed what should have been a 2020 season until March. Because of con- struction on the RHS campus, the team often didn't have an area to practice. Some practice sessions were held off- campus at Grant Middle School.
The Pirates perse- vered, and Gates said the team's motto was flexibility to handle every challenge. "They just picked that ]theme] up and ran with it," he said.
The team will have
the month of May off in a brief offseason, doing lifting twice daily the remainder of the school year. They'll begin the summer passing league season on June 4, and then start conditioning and eventually practice for the 2021 fall season. That campaign starts with an Aug. 13 scrim- mage against Kingsburg, with the season kicking off a week later against Woodlake High.
"I told them 'when they hang that [champi- onship] banner in there [the gym], no one can ever take that away. You can come back and say you're a champion," Gates said.

The Sanger High Apaches boys soccer team closed in on an- other Country Metro Athletic Conference championship last week, posting a pair of pivotal road victories against Madera (1-0 on April 27) and Bullard (4-1 on April 29).
The reigning CIF Central Section and Northern California Division 2 champions (14-1, 5-1 CMAC) had a chance to wrap up the crown in a May 4 eve-
ning contest against second place San Joa- quin Memorial (3-2-1 conference) at Tom Flores Stadium.
The Apaches' lone loss this season was a shocking 2-1 overtime setback at home to Edi- son on April 20. Its the lone league and season win for the Tigers (1-11, 1-5), who host Sanger
