Staff Report
Reedley police arrested two Parlier men in connec- tion to a smash-and-grab bur- glary at a Reedley jewelry store on April 11.
Miguel Corona, 25, and Juan Gomez, 19, were arrest- ed in Parlier shortly before 2 a.m. on April 12.
The break-in and bur- glary occurred at Marquez Jewelry on East Manning Avenue shortly before 5 a.m. on April 11.
Officers arriving at the scene found the front doors smashed in, according to Police Chief Joe Garza. They searched the store and verified that no one was inside.
Garza said police were able to pull security cameras from the store. Video showed a vehicle ramming into the doors and suspects breaking a display case.
“It shows them breaking the cases and grabbing stuff and running,” Garza said of the video. “We know that they grabbed something and took something.”
Police were able to iden- tify the vehicle and locate the suspects in Parlier. Of- ficers and a detective then went to Parlier and found the vehicle at a residence, Garza said. Police executed a search warrant and recovered prop- erty that had been taken from Marquez Jewelry.
“This was some really good police work on the part of my investigators and our officers,” Garza said. “They

really put a lot of things together re- ally quick. We were able to get these guys in custody.”
Corona and Gomez were charged with felony burglary, van- dalism and committing a felony with a firearm. Co- rona also was charged with vandalism and posses- sion of nar-
ofamaninashed.Theman was identified as 26-year-old Pedro Garcia of Parlier. The body was found at a property near the intersection of Lin- coln and Newmark avenues.
Garza said that search was unrelated to the Reedley burglary, and that the Sanger Police Department took over the investigation because the crime scene was in that city’s jurisdiction.
Silver Rodriguez, Sanger police chief, said in a news re- lease that the case is a homi- cide investigation. Rodriguez said investigators are trying to determine when Garcia was last seen and who he was seen with.
Anyone with information about Garcia is asked to con- tact Sanger police Investiga- tor Abraham Ruiz at (559) 399-8027.
cotics.
In a separate case, Reed-
ley police executing a search warrant on April 12 south of Sanger discovered the body

Michael Velasquez, the newest officer in the Reedley Police Department, watched as his father, Michael Velasquez Sr., pinned on his badge during a swearing in ceremony on April 11 in the Reedley City Council chambers. Velasquez’s mother, Rita, smiled as she watched the pinning. Velasquez began his journey to become a police officer as a Reed- ley Police Explorer. He advanced to the Cadet program before being promoted to reserve community service officer. Velasquez then went through the police academy while be- ing sponsored by the department. Chief Joe Garza said the promise of a job as an officer was the “carrot” dangled in front of Velasquez. “Michael is an example of what we want to
do going forward,” Garza said. “We want to bring young men and women through these programs and get them to where Michael is at today.”
