It was a crazy week yet memorable week for the Sanger High Apach- es football team.
On the day the school honored returning Pro Football Hall of Fam- er and SHS alum Tom Flores, the team almost didn't have a game. On Sept. 15, the team learned the Centennial High from Bakersfield was cancel- ing its trip north.
But Apaches athletic director Brian Penner was able to arrange a game with unbeaten Kennedy High from Delano on short mortice, and the teams squared off on Sept. 17. Despite yielding first half touch- downs by fumble and interception return, SHS took charges in the

fourth and went on to a 28-14 victory.
"Our kids responded very well to a tough situ- ation," coach Jorge Pena said. "They handled the cancellation and then
the last-minute prep for Kennedy better than ex- pected. I'm very proud of the team and coaching staff for rolling with it and adjusting on the fly."
Sanger's defense was
outstanding, limiting a Kennedy team averag- ing 400 yards per game on offense to just 100 total yards. Ashton Ro- driguez rushed 72 yards including scoring runs
of 3, 6 and 1 yard. Josiah Duarte also threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Nikko Ortega.
Sanger gets right back at it during a short week, traveling to Clovis
to take on Clovis East for a 6:30 p.m. matchup at Lamonica Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 23. It's a makeup of the Sept.
