Rogelio “Roger” Isquierdo was born on November 15, 1932 in Edcouch, Texas to Reymundo and Griselda Isquierdo. He entered into heaven on the afternoon of Thursday, September 9, 2021 in Fresno, CA after many years of battling illnesses and peacefully passed into the glorious presence of his Lord and Savior.
Rogelio is survived by his three adult children: Rogelio “Roger” Guadalupe Isquierdo of Lodi, Carmela Isquierdo of Sanger, and Mary Eloise Isquierdo of Clovis. He was blessed with three grandchildren, all boys: Rene Anthony Isquierdo of Clovis, Mateo Tomas and Will Alexander Isquierdo of Lodi. In addition, Rogelio is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Olga and Matilda, and brother Cayetano.
Rogelio lived in the Edcouch, Texas area in his youth. Even as a child, temporarily living in campsites throughout Texas, Michigan, and California while working in the fields, Sanger, CA would eventually become his home. His youthful experiences of hard work sowed his work ethic, all while displaying a great sense of humor. It was in Sanger that he met Josie, who would monopolize his attention and heart thereafter. Josie was still in high school when they met, and he waited a few years to marry her as she completed two years of junior college. Rogelio worked for a large farm, then a manufacturing plant, and as a custodian at the Washington Academic Middle School and finally, as a custodian at Centerville Elementary School in Sanger. He loved his custodian job best as he was able to joke and tease with many of the Sanger youth at that time.
Shortly after Rogelio was diagnosed with diabetes, he retired from Sanger Unified School District. Josie sold her H & R Block franchise and opened her bookkeeping business, DBA Josie’s Corner across from the 7-11. The addition of sales of gifts, balloons, and novelty items was where Rogelio helped and dealt with the public, especially many high schoolers purchasing balloon bouquets and whom he already knew from school. Josie’s Corner eventually outgrew the small location, moved across Sanger Park, then again when this location burned down, moved downtown Sanger, first across from JC Penney and then next to JC Penney. Here they remained until Josie became ill herself and returned to the home office, with Rogelio helping and supporting all the way. Rogelio’s sense of humor and personality were always on full display at home, the store, but especially for all of his cousin’s younger siblings, nieces and nephews, as many could attest.
Josie’s involvement with the church, St. Mary’s, meant that Rogelio was also very active. Because of their involvement, all three children grew up in the church, volunteering for fundraising events and helping on all church festivals. Rogelio would make carnival–like games for all church festivals, such as the “Scream in the Dark” Halloween events, church festivals, Easter basket and bake sales, etc. Rogelio had a quiet strength with his faith that resonated with his family and friends.
He leaves behind a strong legacy of love, hard work, faith and love for his family. Rogelio’s life changed with the arrival of his first grandson, Rene, whom he adopted as his father-figure. His heart only expanded with the arrival of his other two grandsons, Mateo and Will. Despite his continuous ailments and condition, he promised to witness all three graduate, and he did. He is remembered as loving to attend the flea markets, to either sell or buy, but those Sunday mornings at the Sunnyside flea market were special. This was where Roger, his oldest, learned to bargain, purchase and sell all used items. He loved teasing women shoppers, who were always haggling for discounts. He would tell them, “You don’t know how to sew or wash clothes,” if they noticed a small tear or stain on clothing. After a rough morning of flea market negotiations, he would listen to Ranchera Mexican style music, sometimes Freddy Fender and especially Elvis Presley, on our old stereo system.
Rogelio will always be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and Christian. He had a huge and loving heart that was always open and available for family, friends, and many of the youth whom all adopted him as their uncle.
A Celebration of His Life will begin with the public viewing and visitation from 11am – 1pm, followed by recital of the Holy Rosary at 12pm at Wallin’s Sanger Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 22, 2021. A funeral mass will begin at 1:30pm at the St. Mary’s New Catholic Church (12050 E. North Ave, Sanger,
CA) and conclude with his reception at the Sanger Woman’s Club, 1602 7th St, Sanger, CA. Flowers may be sent to Wallin’s
Sanger Funeral Home, 1524 9th Street, Sanger, CA 93657, (559) 875-6555.
