Khi-Rho Youth Group marks 40-year anniversary

The Khi-Rho
Group from St. Anthony of
Padua Catholic Church cel- ebrated its 40th anniversary on May 11.
The youth group was
founded in May 1979 by Fr. Juan Nacauili. The name Khi- Rho is the Greek symbol for Christ. The group’s purpose is to serve God through the church, the community and to build fellowship among the youth.
The event began with aMassat5p.m.inthenew church, followed by din- ner at St. La Salle Carholic School. Joe Ibanez, a former member, presented the group with a new Khi-Rho city sign to replace the old one that was on Dinuba Avenue near the Department of Motor Ve- hicles.
The other sign, which was located by the Manning Bridge, had been thrown away when they renovat- ed that area. Sandy Tellez Freedenburg, a former mem- ber, was in Kettleman City at Bravo Farms when she saw the group’s old Khi-Rho sign on a small building that looked like a chapel. Some- one had found it and hung it there.
The evening featured a slide presentation of the past 40 years of group activities. There were about 150 in at- tendance, including several original members. The cele- bration concluded with a DJ and dancing.
The Khi-Rho Youth Group expresses their ap- preciation to Msgr. John Esquivel for his encourage- ment and loving support. The group also expressed appreciation to the Sisters of Divine Zeal, Knights of Co- lumbus, and all those whose hard work made the 40-year milestone and anniversary celebration possible.
In a statement from St. Anthony’s Church, Esquivel also praised the group.
“On behalf of the Parish, we say thank you for all that the Khi-Rho youth group has done over the years,” Esquiv- el said. “A special thank you for all the work that they did in making the 100th anniver- sary celebration of our Par- ish a huge success.”
